Our client, a WordPress plugin company focused on the Divi theme, was looking to migrate their existing plugins from the Divi 4 framework to the newly released Divi 5 framework. With Divi 5 incorporating similarities to Gutenberg, the project required a developer proficient in ReactJS, PHP, and a deep understanding of both the Divi framework versions. The goal was to ensure that their plugins functioned seamlessly on Divi 5 while maintaining compatibility with their existing plugin architecture.

The project also included creating a simple WordPress plugin that allowed users to select and display Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and customize the appearance of those fields using styling options.

Key Challenges

Framework Migration:

The key challenge was transitioning the client’s existing plugins from Divi 4 to the new Divi 5 framework, which required a robust understanding of both frameworks and ReactJS development.

React Integration:

Given that Divi 5 had similar components to Gutenberg, we needed to implement ReactJS-based development to maintain compatibility and extend plugin functionalities.

Divi 5 Migration Strategy

Our team started by reviewing the client’s existing plugins in Divi 4to understand their structure and dependencies. We identified the key elements that would require modification to ensure compatibility with Divi 5, including updates in PHP logic, ReactJS components, and frontend rendering mechanisms.

We refactored the existing plugins’ codebase to ensure they were optimized for Divi 5’s ReactJS-based architecture, which provided the ability to integrate custom blocks more seamlessly with Gutenberg-like functionality.

Plugin Creation with ACF and Gutenberg Block

We developed a simple Gutenberg block plugin that allowed users to select an ACF field of their choice. This block would display the field’s value on the frontend, whether it be text, number, or any other format supported by ACF.

The plugin included a user-friendly interface that provided users with a dropdown menu to choose from available ACF fields. Clear and intuitive field names and descriptions were added to enhance the user experience (UX).

ReactJS and PHP Integration

Leveraging our knowledge of ReactJSand PHP, we ensured that the plugin was optimized for performance and easily extensible for future updates. React components were used to build the block interface, while PHP handled the backend logic for rendering ACF field data and settings persistence.

The plugin adhered to WordPress’ block development guidelineswhile maintaining compatibility with both Divi 4 and Divi 5 environments.
